Keeping Your Certification Active

Your credentials remain current until the expiration date listed in the certification package, sent to you with your certificate. To maintain active certification, you must apply for renewal of your credentials yearly. A certification renewal package will be mailed to the home address provided on your certification exam. If this information changes, you should notify PMI immediately to ensure uninterrupted communication.

Each CEU is the equivalent of one hour of continuing education. PMI provides several ways for certified professionals to earn the necessary CEUs each year. Be sure to read this section in its entirety, including the Frequently Asked Questions section for complete information. If you have additional questions, please contact PMI's Professional Services Department at 800-259-5562.

Once you have completed your CEU requirements, you must submit documentation along with your renewal form and a $75 fee to PMI. If you have more than one PMI certification, the fee is $50 for the second certification and $25 for the third when recertifying within the same calendar year. Therefore, if you renew three certifications in the same calendar year, the recertification fee is $150.

    CEU Requirements

CMC/CMIS: CEUs must be obtained from programs relevant to coding, reimbursement or billing compliance. If you are certified in both CMC and CMIS, you may obtain 12 CEUs toward both certifications and fulfill your CEU requirements for the year.

CMOM: CEUs may be earned from any legitimate continuing education course relevant to administrative functions of a medical practice. This includes coding, reimbursement, compliance and management programs. For example: if you are certified in both CMIS and CMOM, and you earn 3 CEUs at a coding program, you may apply those CEUs toward the CEU requirements for both certifications. However, if you earn 3 CEUs at a management program, you may apply those toward the CMOM requirement only.

    ACCEPTABLE CEU DOCUMENTATION

    • A certificate of attendance/completion. (Note - if you receive a certificate that is not preprinted with your name and/or the date of the program, you must provide one of the following in addition to the certificate.
      1. Proof of registration/payment.
      2. The presenter’s business card in addition to his/her signature and the date on the face of your certificate.
    • A statement on letterhead verifying your participation in the program from either the educator or your supervisor/employer.
    • A detailed agenda from the program that has been signed and dated by the presenter, along with one of the instructor's business card.

NOTE: If you are unsure whether a program qualifies for CEUs toward your recertification, contact PMI's Professional Services Department for pre-approval at: 800-259-5562.
