Prerequisites

PMI certifications are designed to measure a high level of competency in the staff member's area of expertise in the practice. It is recommended that candidates have a minimum of two years of medical office experience before sitting for their exam. Preparatory programs, provided by PMI, are also recommended to receive optimum preparation for the exam.

Supplemental materials are required for the Certified Medical Coder and Certified Medical Insurance Specialist programs. Candidates must have a current copy of the CPT, ICD-9-CM, and HCPCS manuals, plus a medical dictionary on hand to use with the course manual. The Certified Medical Office Manager program does not require supplemental materials.
