Distinguished Faculty

Judy Capko
Judy is a healthcare management and marketing consultant and founder of Capko & Company. She is the author of the popular books Secrets of the Best-Run Practices and Take Back Time: Bringing time management to medicine. Judy has specialized in medical practice operations and business development for more than 25 years. Her emphasis is on building patient-centered strategies and valuing staff’s contribution. She focuses on maximizing resources, resulting in improved operational and financial performance, and better patient service.

Kimberly Johnson
Kimberly is an Assistant Attorney General with the Texas Office of the Attorney General, Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, and is a Special Assistant United States Attorney with the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas, San Antonio.  In Federal District Court, she prosecutes cases involving health care fraud.  She served ten years as a Judge Advocate General in the United States Air Force where she gained experience as both a criminal prosecutor and defense attorney.  She also adjudicated tort claims (including medical malpractice), reviewed contracts, and served as a hospital/clinic legal advisor.  Since 2008, she has hosted a multi-agency Health Care Fraud Working Group designed to coordinate efforts in fraud detection and prevention. Kim earned her Juris Doctorate from Stetson University College of Law and her LL.M. from George Washington University, Washington, D.C.

Bernal Reneer
Special Agent Reneer conducts white collar crime investigations for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in San Antonio, TX.  He investigates all types of cases, including allegations of healthcare fraud.  Agent Reneer joined the FBI in Dallas, Texas.  He has been previously assigned to the FBI in Honolulu, Hawaii, and McAllen, Texas.  He holds multiple certifications in specialized law enforcement training, tactical operations, aviation and weapons management.

Robert W. Liles, JD, MBA, MHA
Robert Liles is lead legal counsel on matters of compliance for PMI, and is the lead developer for PMI’s new Compliance credential (CMCO). He was the first National Health Care Fraud Coordinator and subsequently worked as Deputy Director of the U.S. Department of Justice, Executive Office for United States Attorneys. In addition to his law degree, Robert holds a Master’s in Hospital Administration. As Managing Member in the Washington D.C. based office of Liles Parker, PLLC, Robert heads one of the nation’s leading law firms focused on healthcare fraud defense and regulatory matters representing healthcare providers in civil, criminal, and administrative proceedings. He also serves as outside compliance counsel to a number of national health care organizations and a third-party billing association.

Doug Arrington, Ph.D., FNP, CHC, CHRC, CMC, CPC-H, CPMA
Doug is the Director of the Office of Billing Compliance at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Doug is responsible for the Billing Compliance for all professional billing, hospital billing, and research billing at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Prior to becoming the Director, Doug most recently was with the Anesthesia and Pain Management Department as the Manager, overseeing the day to day administrative operations of the Department. He was a member of the Medical School Faculty and served as the Compliance Officer for the OB/Gyn Department. From 2001 until he joined the Faculty, he served as the Director of Reimbursement for UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Prior to joining UT Southwestern, he served as the Vice President for Network Management at United Healthcare. He has also held several positions within other Managed Care Payers. Doug has worked clinically as a Family Nurse Practitioner in the Chronic Pain, Dual Diagnosis Substance Abuse/Mental Health programs and the Emergency Room at Vanderbilt University. Doug earned a BS in nursing from the University of Utah, a Master’s degree in Nursing from Vanderbilt University, and a Ph.D. in Health Administration with a focus in Health Policy from Kennedy-Western University. Doug has a diverse clinical and administrative background in health care operations, billing, coding, reimbursement and compliance.

D.K. Everitt, CMCO, CCO,IRO
D.K. is a Healthcare Compliance Officer, whose work includes assessing hundreds of medical facilities, implementing Corporate Integrity Agreements and OSHA compliance training. He has authored several compliance books and serves as president of The Compliance Division, L.L.C. He has spent the last 25 years developing and managing corporate compliance programs and shares his talents as an Adjunct Lecturer and Preceptor for Trinity University's Health Care Administration Graduate Studies department. He has shared his knowledge with participants at several of PMI’s conferences. D.K. also serves on PMI’s Contributing Editor, Board of Experts.

Sunjanel Avecilla, EMT-P, PC, CMC, CMOM
Sunjanel is the Senior Consultant with the Physician Practice S.O.S. Group, Inc. She has over 12 years of experience in the healthcare industry. In addition to obtaining her training and license as a paramedic and nurse in the U.S. Army, she holds certifications in practice management (CMOM) and physicians practice coding (CMC). Her wide range of experience includes Management of the Division of Laboratory Medicine at MD Anderson Cancer Center, followed by administrative and clinical practice in family medicine, cardiology and general surgery. Sunjanel has experience teaching coding, medical record auditing and reimbursement, OSHA, OIG, and HIPAA compliance. She is adept at government rules and regulations, and personnel management. Additionally, her experience within the arena of medical practice management education makes her a much sought after medical management consultant throughout the country. She also holds memberships in the GA-MGMA and AAPC.

Maxine Inman Collins, MBA, CPA, CMC, CMIS, CMOM
Maxine has more than twenty years of experience in medical practice management, adult education and general business. She has taught courses at various levels, including teaching business communications and accounting at Midwestern State University in Texas. Maxine has extensive experience teaching administrative and clinical personnel essential medical office skills such as medical terminology, CPT and ICD-9 coding, reimbursement, OSHA, and HIPAA compliance. She is adept at personnel management, government rules and regulations, accounting and budgeting. Additionally, her experience with practice marketing and development make her a knowledgeable and much sought-after practice management resource. Maxine has served as an administrator of a multi-specialty clinic, where she was responsible for all clinic operations including medical records, billing and collections, OSHA, HIPAA and Medicare compliance, and all accounting operations. She also has experience in medical practice consulting, and has successfully launched multiple practices. Maxine holds a MBA in business from Midwestern State University, and is presently working toward a doctorate in Health Care Administration.

Shelley Garrett, CPC, CEC, CMC, CMOM
Shelley has more than 15 years of healthcare experience. Her experience includes working directly for the Medicare program, in multi-specialty physician offices and hospital settings, and also serving as a compliance officer and consultant. Prior to joining Practice Management Institute, Shelley worked as the Director of Socioeconomic and Member Advocacy for an international medical specialty society. Her duties included establishing and instructing a national certification program for her specialty society, providing coding and billing support to its members, and serving as a seminar speaker for coding and compliance issues. Additionally she has written numerous articles and program manuals on coding, billing, compliance, and governmental regulation and served as the staff liaison to both the AMA CPT Editorial and Relative Value Update Committees (RUC). She holds three coding certifications as well as the Certified Medical Office Manager credential.

Rose B. Moore, CMC, CMOM, CPC-I, CCP
Rose has been a motivating force for hundreds of medical practice professionals on the East Coast, where she has conducted numerous seminars and performed internal training for medical practices. Special assignments have included practice documentation, coding, audits, and operations assessments. She has taught a variety of topics geared to physicians and medical practice professionals. Currently, Rose is the Senior Physician Practice Advocate for The Medical Society of Virginia. She also holds memberships with the Medical Group Management Association and the American Academy of Professional Coders. She has received specialized training in CPT from the American Medical Association. Rose has served on multiple health care committees and is well versed in practice management issues. Her experience in all aspects of medical practice administration, surgical scheduling, accounts payable/receivable, patient care coordination, make her a much sought-after problem solver in the health care industry.

Jamie Verkamp
Jamie is a Partner and Director, Growth and Development at (e)Merge. As a sought-after speaker, trainer and consultant, Verkamp shares her knowledge of medical marketing in a straight-forward, interactive manner that not only educates her audiences and clients, but enables medical professionals to develop and implement their growth strategies successfully. Speaking at over 30 events each year and contributing to numerous industry publications, her signature topics include innovative approaches to practice marketing, and creating positive, memorable patient experiences to enhance the bottom line. She is a “people person” with a knack for understanding people, what contributes to their behavior and what attracts their attention. She uses her passion and knowledge in working with medical professionals to identify how patients think, what factors are involved in making healthcare decisions and how to attract the attention of new patients to grow an organization.

Cyndee Weston, CPC, CMC, CMRS
Cyndee is the Executive Director of the American Medical Billing Association (AMBA) and has over 25 years of billing, coding, compliance and reimbursement experience. She works with independent and doctor's office billers providing support, education and resources to AMBA members. Weston is a member of the AAPC and recently earned her CMC through PMI. She serves on the Medical Billing/Coding Program Advisory Board for Montana State University and is a frequent webinar speaker for AMBA, Audio Educator and other educational sources.

David T. Womack
David joined Practice Management Institute® (PMI) in 1991 as the Director of Marketing.  He has served in various business development roles at PMI and is currently the company’s Executive Vice President.  He spends a majority of his time working with hospitals and healthcare systems around the country implementing the PMI curriculum.  Prior to joining PMI, he worked with Control-O-Fax, a company that specialized in time-saving solutions, and office systems for the medical practice.  It was in this role that David got an insight into how important proper systems and training are to the success of the practice.
