    Meet Your Program Director

    Jennifer Walker, RN, MSN, CNS
"I started developing these courses in November of 2000 after identifying a need to make continuing educational programs more accessible and convenient for nurses. Since that time, I have assisted well over 300 nurses re-enter the nursing profession through the online refresher courses. We are excited, also, to offer short modular courses for nurses seeking Continuing Education to maintain licensure, certifications, and/or to gain increased knowledge in certain areas. All of the programs available to you are ANCC certified and are accepted through most boards of nursing. We are excited about the possibility of assisting you as a nurse to grow in your knowledge and depth of understanding of our unique and important profession. Welcome!"

We also have two very talented Associate Instructors who will be answering your questions, and actually interacting with you during your course period.

  • Frequently Asked Questions for Nurses Refresher Courses

    1. How do I know which Refresher course I need? There are 3 options of refresher training. The first option is the full Refresher which is for nurses with inactive licenses in SC or nurses who want a complete refresher experience. The full Refresher includes 44 adult health medical surgical learning modules covering fundamentals through mental health. It is divided by body system and includes a review of commonly used medications. The second part is 8 skilled hands on lab dates. Those lab dates can be done at any one of our partnering colleges. Finally, 84 clinical hours in a hospital or nursing home which can also be completed anywhere you chose. The second option is the Update. This course is only for nurses with an active license. It will not reactivate a lapsed or inactive license. It includes access to the online modules and the 8 skilled lab dates. There is no clinical rotation associated with this option. The final option is the Skills Update for Nurses. This includes 8 skilled lab dates and access to mini modules that review the foundations of the skills you will practice in lab.
    2. Where can I take the 8 skilled lab dates? We partner with Trident Technical College in Charleston, Aiken Technical College, Florence Darlington Technical College, Technical College of the Low Country in Beaufort, and Greenville Technical College.
    3. How do I register? You register at the college where you want to do your labs. They will take your registration and then forward information to Greenville Tech for your access codes.
    4. Is there an orientation? Yes, orientation is mandatory and can be done in Charleston or Greenville. Dates and times will be sent to you once you register.
    5. What are the associated costs? The tuition and mandatory lab fee. Textbooks will run about $150 for the required books. You will have to have malpractice insurance before going to clinical that runs about $90, you will have to have American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR runs about $100, and a physical with proof of immunizations.
    6. What are the clinical requirements? The healthcare institutions will require proof of malpractice insurance, AHA healthcare provider CPR, and a current physical with immunizations. All these will be discussed in the orientation and are due during your second set of lab dates.
    7. What immunizations are needed? You will need to show immunization to rubella, rubeola, varicella, tetanus, hepatitis B, and a current PPD. You can show proof of immunization, have titer levels drawn, or be re-immunized. The health department does this for a minimal fee.
    8. Where can I do CPR? Most community colleges offer American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR, you can check with your local hospital, or the local EMS.
    9. What about the Board of Nursing? You will need to request an application for reactivation or endorsement from the Board of Nursing and send in your application and appropriate fees no later than the end of the first month of the course. You should write across the front of the application GTC RN Refresher Course.
    10. How does this work? You will register, attend orientation, begin your independent work online, and attend your lab dates. Once you have successfully completed your online exams, GTC will submit your information to the BON. The BON, if you have your application and fees in and completed, will then issue you a temporary permit which will allow you to work with your preceptor to complete your 84 clinical hours. Once you complete your 84 clinical hours, GTC will submit the appropriate information to the BON and they will issue you an active nursing license.
    11. How do I get a preceptor? This will be discussed in your orientation. By the end of the first month of the course, you will be expected to have made contact and received a yea or nay from your choice of clinical location. You can contact the facility you wish to do your clinical and tell them you are taking the refresher course at Greenville Tech and need to complete 84 clinical hours with a preceptor and would they be willing to work with you. You should contact the Director of Nursing Office first and then work from there. We do have a list of clinical sites we have used in the past with contact information. You will receive that once you log into the online course. Once you have made initial contact and received your response, you will email the course coordinator with the name and location of your clinical site.
    12. Do we pay the preceptor? No, however, you may be asked to sign a contract with the agency and this is up to you.
    13. How long is this course? You will have 3 months to complete your online work and your lab dates will be held during this time. You will have 6 weeks to complete your 84 clinical hours.
    14. When do classes begin? We have classes that begin the first of January, the first of May, and the first of August.
    15. For more information and lab dates, times, and locations go to www.gtbmc.com and click the link for the refresher course. The lab dates, times, and locations are listed on the course schedule.
