Medicare Exclusion: New OIG Rule Expands Exclusion Authority

Presented by: Heidi Kocher, JD, MBA, CHC

Webinar/Audio Conference FAQs

The OIG has recently published a new rule updating its sanctions and exclusions procedures, effective on February 13, 2017. Now is the time to review and update your practice’s policies and procedures relating to exclusions and sanctions screening.

If your provider is excluded, he or she will no longer be eligible to participate in Medicare – or any other federally funded healthcare program. You might be surprised to learn that today many other payers also require that your provider NOT be designated as excluded. Don’t risk your practice’s future by thinking it can’t happen to you!

You can be a hero, not a villain when it comes to sanctions screenings and protecting your practice from this risk. Healthcare attorney and recognized compliance expert Heidi Kocher will walk you through the new exclusion rule in plain language.

  • Review the OIG’s expanded scope of permissive exclusion authority which could lead to more docs being excluded if they fail to cooperate with federal audits or investigations.
  • Learn what individuals and entities your practice needs to screen, how often, and how an excluded provider may be reinstated.
  • Gain tips on navigating the pitfalls of conducting screening and guidance for implementing an effective sanctions screening program.
