Medical scribes can positively affect physician efficiency and retention, patient satisfaction, and the practice’s performance. Scribes free up providers to perform higher-level tasks, which can lead to reduced wait times and improved relationships with patients.

However, there are financial, privacy and risk management considerations. Improved documentation quality in EHRs is a big plus, but the Joint Commission has set limitations on what scribes may and may not do. Stay compliant; manage and monitor scribes in your practice.

Maxine has more than 30 years of experience in medical practice management, adult education, and general business. She is the former administrator of a multi-specialty clinic and has taught numerous practice management, accounting and business communications courses at various levels at Midwestern State University in Texas.
