Coding Cardiovascular System Procedures

About this program

Cardiology coding and billing can be challenging with multiple procedural rules, coding guidelines and complex contractual adjustments. Staying up to date with code changes and updates to the NCCI edits is time intensive. Join this lunch and learn session with expert coder, Sharon Turner, to ensure your knowledge and skills are current. Decrease denials with up-to-the-minute tips and techniques for accurate coding of cardiovascular system procedures.

The presenter will illustrate the complexities of coding and billing invasive and interventional surgical procedures on the heart/pericardium and on arteries/veins. Common invasive/noninvasive and diagnostic/therapeutic nonsurgical cardiovascular services and diagnostic studies will also be addressed.

  • Catheter Placement Procedures
  • Echocardiogram
  • Angiography
  • Electrophysiology services
  • Arrhythmia
  • Interventional radiology

A coder needs to understand the various types of approaches to these procedures. Is it invasive or noninvasive? Does it involve coronary or noncoronary vessels? Is the approach epicardial or transvenous? How many leads does the inserted pacemaker have? Does the procedure involve initial placement, replacement, or repair? Is the catheter placement nonselective or selective? Did the physician perform the interpretation and report or perform the global procedure? Do you know what modifier to append when the definition of the code is for a global procedure and the physician only performed the interpretation and report?

Correct code assignment is essential for proper reimbursement. Get the information you need to ensure your providers receive the reimbursement they are entitled to receive.
