Major changes are coming to the ICD-10-CM code set effective October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026Affected clinical areas include Oncology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Pain Management, Ophthalmology, Gynecology, Primary and Urgent Care, Emergency Medicine, and more. 

The FY 2026 update includes 487 new codes, 38 revised codes, and 28 deletions. Failure to prepare could result in delayed claims and lost revenue. Stay ahead of the curve with this comprehensive review. Highlights include:

  • 110+ new codes for non-pressure ulcers, organized by body site and severity
  • New symptom and sign codes for the digestive system and abdomen, including fifth-digit requirements for coding abdominal and pelvic pain
  • Expanded R codes for more precise reporting of tenderness and pain in the pelvic, perineal, subpubic, abdominal, and flank areas
  • New code for cannabis hyperemesis syndrome (CHS)
  • Z code additions for documenting social determinants of health (SDoH)
  • Two new subcategories in the Genitourinary chapter
  • Multiple changes in Chapter 13: Diseases of the Musculoskeletal System
  • New code for fluoroquinolone antibiotic poisoning
  • Increased specificity requirements for eyelid inflammation
