Webinar/Audio Conference FAQs

How long does it take your office to send medical records to patients when they request them? Do these requests go through a central clearinghouse? How much do you charge for this service?

Has your office been graded yet by ciitizen.com/survey, an ongoing independent survey company contracted to measure how well providers comply with a patient’s request under the HIPAA Privacy Rule? The Office of Civil Rights announced this initiative as an enforcement priority in 2019 to support an individuals' right to timely access their health records at a reasonable cost under the HIPAA Privacy Rule.

Failure to expedite patient records inquiries could lead to fines under the HIPAA Right of Access Initiative. A report stemming from a 2019 administered by medrxiv survey of responses from 51 health care providers and 3003 healthcare institutions, showed that many barriers still exist to address with regard to HIPAA Right of Access Guidelines.

Healthcare Attorney Heidi Kocher will train you and your team to understand these important legal obligations and establish protocols ensure that your office stays in compliance with HIPAA guidelines. Get answers to these questions and more:

  • What are the four key components of HIPAA Right of Access?
  • What is the correct way to handle a patient record request?
  • How can you reduce the barriers that hinder responsiveness?
  • What is the proper method for releasing records: electronically, through a clearinghouse, sent by secure mail?
  • What fees can be charged this service?
  • Where can you access HIPAA right of access guidelines published by the OCR?
