Evaluation and management (E/M) services refer to diagnostic/therapeutic management of the patient furnished by healthcare providers. According to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) E/M services have been vulnerable to fraud and abuse. CMS requires healthcare providers to accurately determine the appropriate complexity level of an E/M service, corresponding to the amount of skill, effort, time, responsibility, and medical knowledge required for the healthcare provider to deliver the service to the patient. This course is designed to focus on the specific rules relevant to E/M coding and how to determine the appropriate E/M code level for the service provided and the criteria used in making that determination.

Topics Covered:

  1. Review of the coding guidelines of evaluation and management services to ensure proper billing
  2. Provide an understanding of new verses established patient guidelines
  3. Provide a clear understanding of coding evaluation and management services based on time
  4. Review of the “Incident To” and Teaching Physician documentation requirements
  5. Explore the relationship between documentation and the level of service
  6. Discuss electronic health records documentation pitfalls
  7. Offer coding tips and strategies to ensure proper billing of evaluation and management services
