Webinar/Audio Conference FAQs

The pressure to reduce the cost of healthcare combined with the success of recent audits in returning billions of dollars to government and private payers has led to ever-increasing audit scrutiny of medical providers. Will you be ready when they knock on your door? This session covers the essential steps for preparing and responding to an audit.

An audit can be burdensome to the physician practice, sometimes resulting in demands for repayment, penalties, fines, or even jail time. Extrapolation is commonly used by payers, who use a variety of formulas to calculate an amount based on a review of only a sample of your records and exponentially raises the value of alleged overpayments. Take a proactive approach and find out how to mitigate the risk of adverse outcomes. Don't take false comfort in the codes applied by your EHR. Conduct random audits of your coding and billing practices to ensure compliance with CPT®, other coding rules and relevant medical policies of payers. If you identify a problem, take immediate steps to address it.

Accurate and clear charting is the key to ensuring your practice will withstand an audit. Do you regularly review Medicare’s Comprehensive Error Rate Testing (CERT) report? Payers know whether a practice’s coding and documentation is consistent with its peers and in line with clinical standards. Know where your practice stands. Become equipped to effectively respond when faced with a request for medical records or an audit letter. Know how much time you have to respond to the request and when to seek an extension. Failure to respond can result in payment denial for the claim or recoupment pending appeal.

Join expert Regina Mixon Bates, an approved OIG IRO (Independent Review Organization), and learn how to best respond and protect your practice in the event of an audit. This session will provide clear guidance on reviewing current practices and addressing problematic areas. Triggers to avoid will be identified. The Instructor will provide resources to help improve compliance in your practice.
