E/M Chart Auditing for Physician Services

Are your Evaluation and Management (E/M) auditing skills up to par? Don't skimp on self-checks of E/M coding and documentation in your practice. Attend this session to review the basics of level-of-service audits and learn a step-by-step process to implement your own internal audit program. Understand key terms and concepts to effectively communicate with providers and staff about chart documentation. Learn how to identify and avoid common pitfalls and uncover revenue holes that can improve the practice’s bottom line.

E/M services claims are often under scrutiny by the OIG, government-contracted and third-party payers. Improve your knowledge of E/M auditing to reduce practice risk and promote accurate claims submissions on the first pass. You can pay a consultant to do it, wait for an audit letter, or take a proactive stance and adopt a systematic approach to cross-checking records that will ensure you know where you stand.

Highlights

  • Receive guided instruction on conducting an internal E/M chart audit
  • Gain tips for staying in compliance and avoiding audit triggers
  • Review coding and documentation guidelines for E/M services including split or shared visits and prolonged services
  • Know how to determine whether appropriate levels of service are billed based on time or medical decision-making (MDM)
  • Understand the elements of MDM and the criteria for selecting a level of service
  • Apply knowledge to case scenarios to ensure correct assignment of E/M codes
