HIPAA Guidance for the Medical Practice
The privacy and security of patient health information is a top priority for patients and their families, health care providers and professionals, and the government. This course provides a comprehensive review of federal legislation and enforcement efforts related to privacy and security protections for the handling of patient health information.
Improve your understanding of HIPAA policies, notices of privacy practice, restrictions of the use of PHI, and required employee training on current requirements. Grasp breach notification requirements and ensure policies and procedures are in place to address the response to potential breaches of unsecured PHI. Know when a breach must be reported to HHS and respond with confidence if a breach of unsecured health information occurs.
The frequency of HIPAA and HITECH compliance enforcement is increasing. Penalties, which are based on the level of negligence, can exceed $2 million per violation. Receive an explanation of current enforcement actions and potential criminal and civil penalties. Gain familiarity with disclosure obligations and patients' rights to access their medical or billing information.
HIPAA requires sanctions against workforce members who violate HIPAA or privacy policies. Be certain that covered entities and business associates complete regular training. Understand and comply with privacy and security requirements to reduce risks associated with providing telehealth services. Prepare to protect against cyber-attacks, ransomware, and other vulnerabilities to ensure CIA of ePHI.
